Train Carrying Hazardous Material Derails in Minnesota

Cook, MN (KROC-AM News)- A trail carrying what are described as hazardous materials derailed in northern Minnesota Monday evening. 

A news release issued by the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office indicates deputies and firefighters responded to the derailment in Field Township, which is about six miles north of Cook. The derailment was reported around 8:20 p.m. 

Upon arrival, first responders found nine cars had derailed. Five of the cars were on their side and four of the cars remained upright, the news release says. 

Two of the derailed cars were carrying hazardous material in the form of Liquefied petroleum gas also described as Propane and Butane. Officials say there was no evidence that any of the materials had leaked out of the train cars. 

The derailment happened in a rural, non-residential area and there is no danger to the public, authorities say. The train was operated by Canadian National Railway. 

There were no injuries reported. No other information has been released as of Tuesday morning.
