One Of The Snowiest Counties In The Country Is Here In SE MN
If you think winter hits harder where we live, you might be onto something, because some counties in the U.S. get buried in snow year after year. And surprise: one of the snowiest counties in the entire country is right here in southeast Minnesota.
Minnesota Is Home to Some of the Snowiest Counties in America
Living here in the Land of 10,000 Snow and Ice-Covered Lakes, we're proud of our ability to not just survive in the winter, but actually thrive during those bouts of sub-zero temperatures or massive snowstorms.
I mean, you're just not a true Minnesotan if you haven't laughed under your breath while watching pictures or videos of folks down south deal with a freak snowstorm that drops-- gasp-- a whole inch or two of snow on their area, which then snarls traffic and pretty much causes the entire state to shut down, right?

Six of the Snowiest Counties in the U.S. Are Located in Minnesota
Well, as it turns out, we're actually justified in having our winter weather superiority complex here in the North Star State, because according to a new survey, six of the snowiest counties in the entire country are located here-- and one of them is right here in southeast Minnesota.
That's the word from the crew over at Lawn Love, who just ranked America’s Snowiest Counties. Here's how they came up with their rankings:
For the 213 U.S. counties with data available, Lawn Love says they explored average monthly historical snowfall rates from November through April from 1991 to 2020 (the most recent data available), single and 3-day historical snowfall records, and access to snow removal services, among 8 total metrics.
Where Olmsted County Ranks Among America’s Snowiest Counties
The number crunchers over at Lawn Love then tallied up all those numbers and put together the 2026 list of the Snowiest Counties in the Country. And a familiar name here in southeast Minnesota made the list: Olmsted County, which landed at #77 on the list. But there were also five other Minnesota counties on the list, three of which are even snowier than Olmsted County:
- #7 - St. Louis County
- #33 - Hennepin County
- #65 - Koochiching County
- #77 - Olmsted County
- #79 - Ramsey County
- #117 - Benton County
Part of the reason we're able to withstand such winter weather, with massive snowfall and bone-chilling cold temperatures, is the fact that Minnesotans know what to do to keep warm-- and also what NOT to do during the cold weather season.
