The Weather Channel Just Dropped The Names No Minnesotan Wants To Hear

It won’t be long before temperatures drop and snow covers the ground once again, welcoming another classic Minnesota winter. Several predictions have already been made about the upcoming season, and if they’re accurate, we could be in for a particularly snowy one.

Get Ready for Another Snowy Minnesota Winter

When major snow events roll in, they don’t just bring school closings and slippery commutes, they sometimes get their own names. Since 2012, The Weather Channel has been naming winter storms, saying it helps make them easier to track on TV and social media.

Critics, however, claim it’s more of a marketing tactic than a meteorological necessity. Either way, when you start hearing one of these names this winter, it’s probably time to grab the shovel.

The 2025–26 Winter Storm Name List

The Weather Channel just released its list of names for the 2025–26 winter storm season. With names like Tyrese (cue the Fast & Furious memes) and Obie, perfect for “Storm Obie-Wan Kenobi” jokes, the list promises at least some entertainment while we dig out the driveway.

In total, The Weather Channel created 26 names this year. Over the past decade, they’ve named more than 280 storms. How far will Minnesota get down this new list before spring finally shows up?

Full List of 2025–26 Winter Storm Names

Alston, Bellamy, Chan, Devin, Ezra, Fern, Gianna, Hernando, Iona, Joseline, Kadence, Louise, Maizie, Nell, Obie, Peyton, Quigley, Rodrigo, Santiago, Tyrese, Ulma, Viviana, Wolfgang, Ximena, Yashi, and Zeb.

Storms are named by a committee of Weather Channel meteorologists who determine what qualifies as a “nameable” event and when a storm should officially earn its title.

The 16 Least Snowy Winters On Record In Duluth History

Since the National Weather Service began keeping weather records in Duluth in the late 1800s, here are the 16 winters with the lowest snowfall totals on historical record.

It is worth noting that the official records from 1941-today have been recorded at the area now known as the Duluth International Airport (away from the lake, on top of the hill). Before then, various locations closer to Lake Superior had been used for official weather recording data. For anyone that knows anything about how Lake Superior and the hill play a role in temperature and snow, you can see how this makes older records inherently different.

While these records note the "least snowy winters", they actually include all seasonal snowfall from July 1 through June 30 of the following year.
