I think most people have heard of the 5-second rule, which suggests that food is safe to eat if you pick it up within five seconds of dropping it. So that you know, that's not always true. Bacteria can stick to food as soon as it touches the floor, and even floors that seem clean can have bacteria. Whether or not they should, many people still follow the 5-second rule.

I've known about the 5-second rule my whole life, but I only recently learned about the 7-second rule. It has nothing to do with food but is something everyone in Minnesota should know about today.

The National Weather Service warns that the heat index could reach up to 110 degrees. This dangerous heat will affect areas in north-central and northeast Iowa, southeast Minnesota, and central, southwest, and west-central Wisconsin.

Everyone is advised to limit their time outside and drink plenty of fluids to prevent heat-related illnesses. Also, it's a good day to follow the 7-second rule.

The 7-second rule is a simple way to check if the pavement is too hot for your dog to walk on. Just place the back of your hand on the pavement for seven seconds. If it hurts your hand, it's too hot for your dog's paws.

Pet owners should be careful when walking their dogs, make sure the animal has plenty of water, and limit its time outdoors.
