That’s according to a criminal complaint filed in Pine County Court on Monday.

Over the weekend the Pine County Sheriff’s Office reported arresting a 31-year-old man after responding to the scene of a fatal shooting Friday night at a rural address near Hinckley.

Deputies responded to a neighboring home around 8:45 p.m. and encountered two men who reported 31-year-old Kirk Edward Hazlett III had shot and killed his father, identified in the complaint as Kirk Edward Hazlett II.

The men, who were at the hunting cabin with the victim at the time of the shooting, reported being alerted by a trail camera to a person coming up the driveway with a handgun.

One of the men said he went into another room to grab his firearm when he heard the cabin door open and the sound of multiple gunshots. When he emerged from the other room, he saw Hazlett III holding a gun and his father wounded from gunshots on the ground, the charges say.

Hazlett III, who was still armed, ordered the two men to sit on a couch and shot his father again. He then took the men’s phones and allowed them to leave the cabin, the complaint says.

Investigators learned that Hazlett III and his father had a strained relationship. Authorities connected the father and son to a disturbance call last month that resulted in Hazlett III being trespassed from the cabin where the alleged murder took place, according to the charges.

Authorities found and arrested Hazlett III at his residence in Cambridge. Hazlett III is facing two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of kidnapping and a first-degree burglary charge.

He’s being held on $1 million conditional bail and is due back in court later this month.
