A once-popular business that less than a year ago had three locations around the Duluth–Superior area has quietly dwindled down to just one remaining store. The question now is how much longer it will last.

Judging by the pace of store closures over the past several years, it may not be long before this familiar retailer vanishes from the Northland entirely, and this time, the internet probably won’t save it.

Once a Gaming Hotspot, Now Nearly Gone from Duluth

Founded in 1984 as a software retailer called Babbage’s, the company evolved during the rise of home gaming consoles and rebranded as GameStop. Business was booming through the 2000s and into the early 2010s. But as the video game industry shifted toward digital downloads and fewer physical discs, GameStop’s fortunes began to fade.

The struggling retailer caught a bizarre lifeline in 2021, when it became the original “meme stock.” A meme stock is one that skyrockets in price mainly because of social media hype, not because the company itself suddenly got better. Reddit and TikTok traders made GameStop famous again, but viral attention doesn’t pay rent forever.

Is It “Game Over” for GameStop in the Northland?

Over the past two years, GameStop has closed hundreds of stores nationwide. More than 300 stores shut down in 2024 and 2025, and the company has already warned of “a significant number” of additional closures ahead.

GameStop once had a location at the Miller Hill Mall in Duluth, which closed earlier this year, along with five other Minnesota locations. There was also a store on Tower Avenue in Superior, but that location is now permanently closed, leaving the only GameStop in the Twin Ports at the Burning Tree Plaza near Best Buy and TJ Maxx.
