It's a new year but some things remain the same, like scammers targeting just about anyone they can and more.

The sad reality is that scammers are never going away and in fact, they are getting more sophisticated with each passing day.

The latest scam making its way around Wisconsin is a great example of that. It was reported by the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection.

This scam was first reported in late December. Here's how it works.

According to the DATCP, there have been several reports of scammers impersonating them to professional and licensed holders.

Scammers are emailing these license holders using an email address that actually looks legitimate. A lot of times with these scams, you can easily spot when an email address is fake or a scam.

That is not the case with this scam, which makes this warning all the more urgent! Scammers are using email addresses like the following:

admin@mydatcp.wi.gov

admin@datcp.wi.gov

To make these emails seem even more legitimate, scammers are adding the official logo of the DATCP and a subject line that grabs your attention and also appears legitimate.

That's not all: scammers are also sharing personal license information for those they are trying to scam, lending all that much more legitimacy. They tell the victim that their license will expire or be revoked unless they click a link and update their information.

Of course, the link leads to phishing. You update your information and all of it goes to scammers to gain access to your personal accounts.

Today, I never click any link or answer any spam calls. If it is actually something important, I tell myself the company or organization will find another way to get ahold of me. Better safe than sorry!
