New I-35 Ramp Closure In Minnesota Causing Sizable Travel Delays

Road construction season is here, and 2025 will once again be a busy year for the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Earlier this year, MnDOT announced that it has nearly 180 road and bridge projects lined up this year, plus an additional 51 projects designed to improve airports, water ports, railroad crossings, and transit infrastructure.

This pretty much means that motorists throughout Minnesota should be on the lookout for road crews and check for road projects and conditions before heading out on any road trip.

Recently, a project was announced in Duluth that will temporarily impact a well-traveled I-35 on-ramp.

A Busy Ramp To I-35 Temporarily Closes In Duluth

This week, the City of Duluth announced the temporary closure of a popular on-ramp to I-35. The ramp is located on West Superior Street in downtown Duluth.

City officials say the closure, which is expected to last through Friday, June 13, is necessary to allow contractors to perform pavement restoration work.

The following detours are in place:

• The eastbound detour runs from Mesaba Avenue to W First Street, to Sixth Avenue W.
• The westbound detour is from W Superior Street to Sixth Avenue West, and then south on Mesaba Avenue.

The City of Duluth acknowledges that the detours may cause significant travel delays for drivers heading south out of downtown. Therefore, commuters may wish to alter their travel plans to avoid delays.

Travelers using the designated detour routes are urged to drive cautiously and without distractions, and allow extra time to reach their destination. On a positive note, at least this project should be done well ahead of Grandma's Marathon weekend, which begins Friday, June 20.
