How To Best Keep Your Dog Calm During Fireworks Season In Minnesota
With the 4th of July weekend fast approaching, you're likely starting to hear random fireworks being set off throughout neighborhoods in Minnesota, and sometimes that can happen later at night than you'd like.
I know that is the case where I live, but I don't let it get to me as I know it goes with the territory with the holiday. However, while I may be able to handle it, my dogs can sometimes get startled if someone sets off a series of loud bangs.
My dogs just bark, but they haven't shown the urge to run away. But other dogs do panic to the point where they'll take off, even if that's not their normal behavior. Some dogs will act uncharacteristically and even jump over fences to escape.
Unfortunately, animal shelters have reported they see a surge of stray dogs and pets following the 4th of July, so each year they remind all pet owners to microchip their pets before the 4th of July. That way, if they do run away, there's a better chance of getting them back.
There are also things dog owners can do to help calm their pets when fireworks are going off. Below are some expert tips to try.
