It's March, and the bulk of winter is (hopefully) behind us, so let's talk spring. The spring season officially starts March 20, 2025, and it can't come too soon.

We all know that predicting the weather in Minnesota is about as easy as making a clean exit without a good old-fashioned 20-minute Minnesota Goodbye, and just like that long, drawn-out farewell, winter might not be in a hurry to leave, depending on which of the latest spring forecasts you believe.

As usual, both the Farmers’ Almanac and The Old Farmer’s Almanac have thrown their hats in the ring with their spring 2025 forecasts... and they don’t exactly agree.

The Battle of the Almanacs

Before we dig into the forecasts, let’s clear up one common misconception: the Farmer's Almanac and the Old Farmer's Almanac are not the same thing. Yes, they both claim to predict long-range weather trends, and yes, they both have been around forever (one since 1818 and the other since 1792). But they use completely different methods.

Farmers’ Almanac uses a secret mathematical and astronomical formula to make its forecasts. It’s all very mysterious, and I half expect there’s a wizard involved somewhere.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac relies on a mix of solar activity, historical data, and modern meteorology to craft its outlooks. More science-y, but still plenty of old-school charm.

What's In Store For Minnesota Weather This Spring?

I love a good weather prediction as much as the next Minnesotan who has deep trust issues, thanks to April snowstorms, but spring around here is always a crapshoot. Some years, we go from winter straight to summer; other years, it feels like we get all four seasons in one day.

So, will we get an actual spring this year, or are we in for another meteorological rollercoaster? Let's find out what the Almanacs say.

Farmers’ Almanac: The Slow Burn to Spring

The Farmers’ Almanac is basically telling us not to put away the snowblower just yet. Their theme is a “Thunder and Zing Spring,” which sounds exciting but mostly means winter is going to drag its feet before finally giving way to spring storms.

Expect cooler-than-normal temperatures and a whole lot of wet weather. So, if you were hoping for an early patio season, you might be disappointed.

Old Farmer’s Almanac: Warm, Dry(ish), and Wild

The Old Farmer’s Almanac, on the other hand, is saying it's gonna be warmer than usual. In fact, they’re calling for temps about 3°F above average across Minnesota, with a big north/south divide in precipitation.

Northern Minnesota is apparently getting the dry treatment, while southern Minnesota is in for a soggier-than-normal season. And severe storms are on the table, too.

If the Farmers’ Almanac is right, prepare for a slow, chilly, and stormy start to spring. If the Old Farmer’s Almanac has it figured out, we might be in for a warmer but still stormy ride this spring.

Either way, it looks like we’ll be having storms and possibly more cool weather, so keep your raincoats handy and maybe hold off on packing up the winter gear until, I don’t know, June?
